KU assistant Young heading to Miami
Exactly two weeks after helping Kansas win the Orange Bowl as the Jayhawks' defensive coordinator, Bill Young will return to South Florida to accept the same position with the University of Miami.
'It's a new opportunity,' Young told The Eagle this afternoon after accepting the position earlier in the day. 'We haven't done everything possible here, but we did pretty well this year.
'Miami is a program that year in and year out has a chance to compete for a national championship. That's something I want to do before my career is over.'
Young, 61, said it may be a couple of days paperwork is completed and he is officially hired by Miami.
At Miami, he'll be the coordinator for Wichita East linebacker Arthur Brown, who orally committed to the Hurricanes last month.
A native of Oklahoma, Young has been KU's defensive coordinator since Mark Mangino arrived as head coach before the 2002 season. He guided the Jayhawks to two of their best defensive seasons in 2005 and in 2007.
KU finished in the top 10 nationally this past season in run defense and scoring defense.
Young will replace Tim Walton who was fired last month after the Hurricane finished 5-7. Randy Shannon was Miami's defensive coordinator before taking over the head coaching position in 2007
