Miami interviews South Florida's McCarney
The Miami Hurricanes interviewed South Florida assistant head coach and defensive line coach Dan McCarney for their vacated D-coordinator position. Head coach Randy Shannon recently fired Tim Walton from that position.
The Hurricane defense was ranked 30th in the nation, allowing 312 points this season, which contributed to the team's poor 5-7 record.
McCarney is no stranger to the position, as he was defensive coordinator for Wisconsin from 1990-94 and was Iowa State's head coach for 12 seasons, leading the Cyclones to a Big XII North co-championship in 2004. This year South Florida is ranked 19th in rush defense but allowed only seven ground touchdowns, which ties the team for second nationally in that specific category.
Commentary: Hard to tell if McCarney would be interested in jumping ship to Coral Gables. The pay and prestige most certainly would be there, but the pressure would be enormous. If accepted, this would definitely be a good hire for Randy Shannon.
